Transit, Time and Condoms

About 54% of New York City residents use public transit, more than any other city in the US. Portland, in comparison, is about 13%. And as we know, not using cars is good for the environment, right?

Well–despite the majority of its population forsaking cars, New York can’t keep up. In a few decades, an extensive study predicts all-day rush hours and transit crammed beyond capacity.

But that’s not all: Due to population growth, New York is running out of electricity and housing. One of the city’s answers? Why its own branded condom, of course.

I wish I knew the answer, but I do know this: green buildings and solar arrays and technological innovation are not going to solve this one.

Surely the imminent quarter-mile tall World Trade Center replacement will help; it’s going to be green, after all…
