Here’s an interesting fact, courtesy of James Kunstler’s blog:

The US has over 20 square feet of retail space per person.
Sweden has 3.3 square feet.
The UK? 2.5.
Those shopping-crazed French and Italians? 2.3 and 1.1, respectively.
That’s right–we’ve got over ten times the space–and we’re building it as fast as we can.
Everywhere.
No end in sight, really.
